A revamped opt-in channel on the UCSF mobile app that helps UCSF employees with health and wellness issues was nominated as the best app with wellness tools in this year’s Modo Labs “Appademy Awards” competition.

Campus Life Services Communications Specialist Sophia Labeko and Wellness & Community Program & Event Coordinator Leslie Martinez took the underutilized opt-in channel and began using it to connect to the UCSF community when the pandemic hit. “At that time, events and gatherings that Wellness & Community relied on had to be canceled indefinitely,” Labeko said. “We moved over to the opt-in channel to harbor a sense of community. We’ve shared messages supporting mental wellness (meditation tips), physical wellness (challenging people to move), financial wellness (discounts), community building resources (live events like Academy of Science, NightLife), and wellness resources like UC Walks.”

Labeko said they’ve also experimented with two-way conversations by sharing a contest to finish the saying “when life gives you lemons..” for a chance to win a gift card. “We’re trying to be a source of community and wellness for our subscribers.”
