April is CLS People Month!

CLS People Month is a time for employees to think about their professional development and work collaboratively with their supervisor to create a Career Development Action Plan in order to strive for professional greatness. (Already start an Employee Development Plan with your supervisor during Performance Evaluation season? Learn how to view it here).

Listed below is a variety of events and self-initiated activities on each day during the month of April.

We hope employees will take advantage of these ‘bite-sized’ development opportunities to plan for their future, both short- and long-term.

- Week One -

Monday, April 1

Sign up for the UC Cool Campus Challenge and learn how you can develop skills to reduce your carbon footprint and promote sustainability.

Tuesday, April 2
[CLS Featured Activity] Attend the Resume and Cover Letter Workshop to learn how to make yourself stand out from the crowd. Diana Kim from the Department of Medicine will share tips on how to avoid common mistakes and make yourself a stronger candidate in the job market. Bring your lunch and your resume and cover letter to Mission Hall Room 2016 from 12:00-1:00, and don’t forget to RSVP!

Have you recognized someone lately? UCSF Recognize is an organization-wide recognition platform that allows us to thank one other and acknowledge a job well done. Recognition helps build positive relationships, encourages collaboration, and fosters teamwork. Give thanks to a coworker today!

People with high emotional intelligence (EI) have strong professional relationships, manage difficult situations well, and are likely to be resilient in situations of adversity. Take an emotional intelligence quiz to find out – how emotionally intelligent are you?

- Week Two -

Monday, April 8
Write in your gratitude journal, or start one today. You can also start a gratitude jar. Once a week, write down three things for which you are grateful. Then, on a bad day or when you are facing challenges in life, pull out your jar or journal and read through it. Your jar or journal is also a great way to celebrate the end of the year, as gratitude has been shown to have positive effects on our resilience and happiness!

Check out a Toastmasters club meeting, which provides a forum for public speaking to support personal growth in a safe environment. Toastmasters for Health meets in Mission Hall 2109 every Tuesday from 12:00-1:00, Toast of the Mission meets every Tuesday at Mission Center Building 126 from 12:00-1:00, and UC Oracles meets every Thursday (except the first Thursday of the month) at Parnassus S-159 from 12:00-1:00.

We all have strength areas. Write them down on a piece of paper. Next, write down the things you are interested in/passionate about. The intersection of these two categories is where you are in your “flow” and when you are in this place, time flies! Do you have a chance to be in your “flow” even more at work? Think about how you can increase these opportunities and discuss with your supervisor.

They will talk about their passions and what motivated them to get to where they are today, discuss their achievements and describe some of the challenges they faced along the way, and reveal what goals they have for the future. Monday, April 29
Try meditating for 5 minutes. Meditation can increase self-awareness, improve concentration, reduce stress and encourages a healthy lifestyle. Sit in a quiet place and close your eyes. Breathe regularly and focus on your in-breaths and out-breaths. When thoughts enter your mind, gently push them away. If this seems hard at first, try it again tomorrow!
