Paddling, Kayaking and Hiking Experiences

Get outside safely and see the San Francisco Bay from a whole new perspective. UCSF Fitness and Recreation is excited to offer rejuvenating paddling, kayaking and hiking experiences to UCSF students at no charge, and to UCSF employees at a discounted rate.

*Please note our Outdoor Programs are currently only open to UCSF students and employees.

Our boathouse, located in the Mission Creek Park, is a short walk from the Bakar Fitness & Recreation Center at Mission Bay. All skill levels are welcome, as we provide equipment, instructions, and on-water safety guides.

How to Sign up For a Trip Rental

Rentals are only open to UCSF faculty and staff at this time. We apologize that guests (non-UCSF affiliates) are not allowed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Kayak Trips
Mission Creek Morning Kayak Trip
Start your day with a relaxing paddle in the protected waterway that is Mission Creek. Our easy to use sit on top kayaks are perfect for a first time kayak experience and our guides will give you the instruction and assistance to make it a no-worries morning. Check out the last remaining houseboat community in San Francisco, look for Herons hunting in the shallows and Paddle to famous McCovey Cove to take in panoramic views of San Francisco Bay, the Bay Bridge, and Treasure Island. Perfect for beginners and families. This trip is two hours and does not go beyond McCovey Cove. No experience necessary.

Mission Creek Moonrise Kayak Trip
Paddle to famous McCovey Cove and take in panoramic views of San Francisco Bay, the Bay Bridge, and Treasure Island as the sun sets to the West while the moon rises over the East Bay. What a gorgeous way to end your day! This trip is two hours.

Mission Creek Sunset Kayak Trip
Paddle to famous McCovey Cove and take in panoramic views of San Francisco Bay, the Bay Bridge, and Treasure Island. This two hour trip is perfect for beginners and families. No experience necessary.

Mission Creek and Beyond
Ready for an adventure? Get out and use those gym muscles as we paddle from our Mission Creek boathouse and under the Bay Bridge! Distance and destination vary with conditions and wind.  Bring a snack and drink to refuel for this two hour trip on the water.

Mission Creek to Crane Cove Kayak Trip
Paddle to the newly created waterfront park, Crane Cove! The tides are just right for this four hour, four mile trip on the water. Bring a lunch or snack and relax on the beach before riding the outgoing tide back to Mission Creek.


Stand Up Paddling (SUP) Trips
SUP is fun, easy, and right in our backyard at Mission Creek. Our staff teaches you the basics and guides you on the creek’s calm water which makes for a stable ride on the paddle board.  It’s an ideal place for beginners. Boards, paddles, and life jackets are all included. No experience needed.

Mid-Week Rental Special
Looking for the perfect way to take a break and get some fresh air? Kayak or Stand Up Paddle at your own pace with our new Mid-Week Rentals. UCSF employees get half off rentals Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 3:00-6:00 pm! Come on your own or bring a UCSF co-worker for just $10/hour.


Fees:
Mid-Week Rentals: $10/hour
Weekend Rentals:
• UCSF Fitness and Recreation Member - $35 (regular price $65, discount already applied at checkout)
• Non-member: $40 (regular price $65, discount already applied at checkout)

Cancellations and No-Shows
Cancellation policy: If you are unable to attend, cancel using our app at least 48 hours prior to the start of the activity. (Click on the booking and a cancel button will appear. To cancel with less than 48 hours prior to the start of the activity, contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). A credit towards a future trip will be issued, or a refund minus $30 processing fee.
No-Shows: No credits or refunds will be issued.

UCSF Student Hikes
Join one of Outdoor Program’s knowledgeable staff on a free hike into one of the Bay Area’s many open space areas. Enjoy the fresh air and nature while staying local and safe. With locations like the Marin Headlands, Point Reyes, and other open spaces, the array of potential explorations is endless.

Cancellations and No-Shows
Cancellation policy: If you are unable to attend, cancel using our app at least 48 hours prior to the start of the activity. (Click on the booking and a cancel button will appear. If you have a problem, contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) This allows another participant to take your spot in our popular program. No refunds will be provided within 48 hours of your reservation.
No-Shows: If you do not attend a trip and do not send an email (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) at least six hours prior to the activity, booking privileges for activities through 6/30/21 will be revoked.

COVID-19 Safety

As part of the UCSF Fitness and Recreation Outdoor Programs, we long for breathtaking adventures and sometimes adrenaline producing endeavors. However, safety is always our priority. Below are the safety measures we’re taking to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

• All equipment is cleaned, sanitized, and not used for 72 hours between uses
• Staff and participants are required to pass the UCSF daily health screening process
• Staff and participants are required to wear masks at all times
• Physical distancing of six feet will be maintained while on land, launching and docking, and while on the water
• Two-person kayaks are limited to people from the same household
