“The Rec Pass trips continue to be one of the coolest things about UCSF, enriching the lives of its students by showcasing the unparalleled natural beauty of California.” -Sagar Desai, Med Student, class of 2019
“More so than the specific features of the trip was really just how awesome it was that we were able to just drive away, no planning, no making reservations or having to figure out logistics and just show up and be in nature. It was so freeing and it really is one of the best things about medical school.” -Lauren Meiss, Med Student, class of 2018

Signing up for Trips
Bring a guest on as many trips as you’d like. Guests of Alumni Pass holders receive a 50 percent discount off the general public price for outdoor trips. One guest is allowed per alumna or alumnus per trip.
To register a guest:
2) Contact Kirk McLaughlin at 415.686.2870 with a credit card to pay within 5 days of the trip
3) You will not be charged until we know 100% that the trip will happen (occasionally, trips are cancelled due to poor weather conditions)
The Rec Pass and Alumni Pass expire June 30 each year. At the beginning of the academic year, the Rec Pass goes on sale. You can purchase it at any time throughout the year. The later you wait to purchase it, the fewer sports leagues, special events, and Outdoor Programs trips there are for you to participate in.
Cancellations must be made 3 days prior to the first day of an activity, program, session, lesson, pre-trip meeting or trip. More than one cancellation made within the 3 day window will result in the Rec Pass or Alumni Pass being revoked.
No-shows are when a participant does not attend a trip and no prior communication occurred more than 6 hours before the start of the trip. A No-show results in immediate revocation of the Rec Pass or Alumni Pass
A maximum of 3 cancellations are allowed per quarter (July-Sept, Oct-Dec, Jan-March, April-June). If a pass holder exceeds 3 cancellations in a quarter, their Rec Pass or Alumni Pass will be revoked.
Frequently Asked Questions
The trip that I want to sign up for is full. What do I do?
We often get a lot of cancellations as schedules change. Camping trips often have 10+ cancellations close to the date of the trip. Keep your schedule open and check for emails as we get closer to the date of the trip.
How do I get to the trip’s meeting location?
Transportation is not included for any trip. Participants are provided each other’s contact information to facilitate carpooling.
Do I need my own camping gear?
All camping equipment and food are included for most trips. Exceptions are noted.
What is the pre-trip meeting?
Prior to every overnight trip there is a pre-trip meeting where we go over the itinerary and what to bring. We also hand out gear at the meeting. If you cannot attend the pre-trip meeting, schedule an appointment to pick up your gear at another time.
