Marissa Castoro Finds Community and Fitness in F45 Training Classes

As a licensed vocational nurse at the high-risk UC San Francisco Obstetrics & Gynecology Clinic at Mission Bay, Marissa Castoro takes care of women throughout their nine months of pregnancy. But when she needs to take care of herself, you can find Castoro sweating to the music in the early morning F45 Training classes at the Bakar Fitness & Recreation Center at Mission Bay.
“There are a lot of things I love about F45 but first are the friendships I’ve created as being a regular attendee in the 6am class,” Castoro said. “My little group keeps me so motivated to show up and to push myself harder. I look forward to seeing my friends in class and I tell myself to try and lift what they lift and that has definitely pushed me to my true limits.”
F45 Training combines elements of High-Intensity Interval Training, Circuit Training, and Functional Training. This has led to the development of 31 different, 45-minute workout experiences featuring 3,000 exercises. It is offered five times a day, Monday through Thursday, three times on Friday, twice on Saturday and once on Sunday. Classes are only offered at the Mission Bay location.
Castoro also credits the early morning F45 coaches. “There are some really great coaches in F45,” she said. Castoro said she loves the fact that she can attend an F45 class first thing in the morning and the 45-minute workout helps her hit her workout goals. She’s also waiting for Hollywood movie star Mark Wahlberg, a devoted fan and investor in the program, to walk into the UCSF Mission Bay studio. “I keep tagging him on Instagram and Twitter,” she said with a laugh.
On a more serious note, Castoro said the workouts help give her energy to start the day. “I feel like I have accomplished so much after my 6am workout and it’s just the start of the day. I love to get my workouts out of the way early because after work, I usually take my son to his soccer practice and other activities.”
Castoro first began going to the gym with a coworker in 2016. “We started taking a few morning classes before work. We really enjoyed the BODYPUMP/GRIT series. My motivation at that time was to lose weight and become more active, but now I have created this gym lifestyle for myself that I love so much. I have such a great group of people I work out with regularly at 6am that they have become my motivation.”
