Student Back-Up Care

Student Back-Up Care

Now serving UCSF Students!
Effective July 1, 2021, students have zero co-pays when using in-home and center-based care.

UCSF Family Services and the Student Services Committee are excited to share with you that UCSF has expanded Bright Horizons Back-Up Care program to students! While we know that many UCSF student families are seeking longer-term alternate care as a result of COVID-19 school and care disruptions, we hope this program will help with short-term needs and encourage you to review other child care resources available to the UCSF community at this web page.

The program offers high-quality back-up care when you need to be at school or work and your regular child or adult/elder care is unavailable.

Sign up and reserve back-up care when:

• Your child’s school is closed
• A regular caregiver is unavailable
• Adult and elder care support is needed in their home or yours
• Your child needs mildly ill care

Program Details
• Access up to 10 days of back-up care per academic year (July 1-June 30)

Out-of-Network Reimbursement
If the Back-Up Care Program is unable to provide you with the care it typically covers, you may be offered out-of-network reimbursement of $100 per day to offset the cost of care you source on your own. Each reimbursement day counts as a back-up care day. Out-of-network care reimbursement is not offered retroactively and applies only to care provided by someone outside your household. Refer to UCSF Families’ FAQs to learn more.

Mildly Ill Care is Back
After being suspended at the start of the pandemic, mildly ill care will be available again starting July 1, 2022. You will be able to reserve mildly ill care online, via the app or by phone. Note: with the return of mildly ill care, out-of-network reimbursement for this type of care will be possible only if Bright Horizons is unable to fill your care reservation.

Quality of Care
Child care centers in the network must be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) or meet or exceed state child care licensing requirements. All in-home care agencies in the network are credentialed and employ trained caregivers. All center and in-home care providers participate in an extensive screening and training process. See our UCSF Back-Up Care Program Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs pdf) for more details.

Days/Hours Available
Hours vary depending on the type of care needed, and the service is designed to provide care when students need to be at school or work. In-home care is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during your school/work hours. Center based care hours vary based on the center’s operating hours. There is a 4 hour minimum for all care requests.
