Modesto Morales is an avid basketball player, so when his fiancé accepted a job as a nurse at UC San Francisco and the couple made the move from Texas, Morales was thankful to find an active hoops scene at the Bakar Fitness & Recreation Center at Mission Bay.

“I like to play basketball at least twice a week and the courts at the fitness center are amazing,” he said. “We can run 5-on-5 games which gives me a great cardio workout.”

When Morales visited his fiancé soon after she took the job at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco, she gave him some free guest passes to the fitness center. “I immediately loved the welcoming environment and outstanding staff. I also enjoy the amenities like towel service, swimming pools and, of course, the basketball courts.”

Morales said he also liked the fact that he could use the Millberry Fitness & Recreation Center at Parnassus with his membership at Mission Bay. “I played in the winter league at Parnassus and it was a great environment.”

Morales has been mixing in new activities with his hoops, including lifting weights and swimming. “There are times I come to the gym seven days a week,” he said. “This is my getaway from the world after a hard day at work or a stressful weekend. It’s great for my mental health as well as my physical health.”

He’s also become an ambassador for the fitness center, promoting it to friends with single-day guest passes. “I bring friends to play basketball or lift weights. The gym has really made a healthy and positive impact on my life.”
