Trainer's Corner

Most of us know the simple equation for weight loss: calories in calories out. If you burn more than you consume your body will start to drop the excess weight it’s been carrying. While this philosophy may be helpful for initial pound dropping it doesn’t address a key issue people continue to avoid. The fact is that we need wholesome good quality fuel for our body to build muscle properly and avoid decease. Not only must we eat a sensible portion but we also must eat foods rich in the nutrients we need. It seems like an unfair task for the general consumer. The reason we must be diligent in checking the quality or “realness” of our food is that sadly over the past 50 years our food supply has become increasingly chemically treated, genetically modified, and flat out poisonous.

It didn’t always used to be this way. Our grandparents drank more, smoked more and used more butter and oil in their cooking then we can imagine. Why then, were the cancer, heart decease and diabetes rates all substantially lower then those of today? The answer is simple and lies in the only thing that has changed for the worse since then. Food. Through the use of growth hormones, antibiotics, low quality grain based feeds and torturous living situations our animal meat supply is not only less nutritious but flat out dangerous. The nutrition we derive from beef, for example, comes from the grass they eat. Grass keeps them healthy, and we eat the healthy meat. Grain and chemicals makes them sick, and we get sick from the meat. Just look at the continuous outbreaks of food related sickness for proof. The same goes for plant life. If you eat things soaked in pesticide and grown in lifeless soil your not going to get the nutrients you need.

There is only one answer and it is blazingly simple. Eat organically and eat locally. We need to develop a relationship with our food. It is what keeps us alive and keeps us healthy. Mother Nature knows best. The less we stop screwing with how animals are raised and plants are grown the better. We all have evolved along the same lines and the more we respect that process, the healthier we’ll be.
